How to Clean a Metal Trash Can

Release time:2026-01-06    Click:26

Cleaning a metal trash can is essential for hygiene, odor control, and preventing pest attraction. Start by taking the can outside and removing all trash and liners. Rinse the interior thoroughly with a garden hose to remove loose debris.

Create a cleaning solution of hot water and a mild dish soap or baking soda. For a galvanized steel can, avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers that can damage the protective zinc coating. Use a long-handled brush with stiff bristles to scrub the entire interior and exterior. For stubborn grime or dried-on spills, let the soapy solution sit for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing. To disinfect and eliminate odors, you can use a solution of white vinegar and water or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Rinse the can extremely thoroughly with clean water after using any cleaning agent to remove all residue. Finally, invert the can and let it air dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag inside. This prevents mold and mildew growth.
