When you’re choosing the right garbage bag, knowing how to measure garbage bags is essential for a proper fit. Here are the key steps to ensure you pick the perfect-sized bag for your trash can.

  1. Measure the Height of Your Trash Can

Use a tape measure to determine the vertical height from the bottom to the top of the trash can.

Add 4–6 inches to this measurement to account for overhang when the bag is placed inside.

  2. Determine the Width

For square or rectangular cans: Measure the shorter side of the opening (width) and double it.

Example: A trash can with a 10-inch width would require a bag with at least 20 inches in width.

For round cans: Measure the diameter of the opening and multiply it by 3.14 (π) to get the circumference.

  3. Calculate the Depth (or Girth)

For square or rectangular cans: Measure the longer side of the opening (length) and double it. Add this to the doubled width. This gives you the "girth" of the can.

For round cans: The circumference calculated earlier serves as the girth.

  4. Combine Dimensions for the Bag Size

The width of the garbage bag should match or exceed the girth of the can.

The length of the bag should be equal to or slightly longer than the total height measurement.

  5. Factor in Bag Thickness

Choose the right bag thickness based on your trash type:

0.35–0.7 mil: Light trash, such as paper or tissues.

1–2 mil: Medium trash, such as food scraps or bathroom waste.

3+ mil: Heavy-duty waste like construction debris.

  6. Double-check with Bag Charts

Many bag manufacturers provide sizing charts based on trash can dimensions. Use these for quick reference.
